Use this map for the general area, or use MapQuest to generate custom directions. But use the detailed map at the bottom for the back roads. Mapquest is not reliable for these, especially once you turn from Yates Ford onto Bent Tree Lane.

Map of Washington Area

From I-495

For the shortest, and usually the fastest, route from I-495, avoid I-66. Instead, take the Braddock Road exit (a few miles south of the intersection with I-66). Turn left onto Burke Lake Road (2-3 miles, major T intersection, stoplight, two lanes set aside for left turns). Stay on Burke Lake as it passes through Burke township (tiny), eventually crossing the Fairfax County Parkway (Rte 7100) and later, Ox Road (Rte 123?), both of which are major roads marked by stoplights. The road gradually narrows from three lanes, to two, to one, until it changes name at the Ox Road intersection, becoming Clifton Road. Continue on Clifton Road until you come to a filling station on the left (in the middle of nowhere) at an intersection, with Henderson Road to the left and Wolf Shoals Road to the right. Continue straight on Clifton Road, watching carefully for the left turn onto Maple Tree Lane. Follow the map at the bottom of this page from there. If you reach Clifton, you missed the Maple Tree Lane turn. It is remarkable that there is a straight, no-turns route all the way from a dinky like place like Clifton all the way to the Beltway. Cowpath heritage, no doubt.

From I-66

In my experience, I-66 is usually best avoided unless you're coming from Centreville or Dulles. If you're coming from Dulles, Rte 28 begins at the first airport exit, marked to Centreville/Manassas. Turn left at the major intersection/stoplight onto Liberia Road just as you're approaching Manassas. Turn left onto Prince William County Parkway in 2-3 miles at a major intersection/stoplight next to a mall and filling station on the right. Take Prince William 3-4 miles and turn left onto Yates Ford Road (3-4 miles, major intersection with stoplight). Bent Tree Lane is a mile or so on the left, marked by a prominent green sign on the right just before the intersection of Yates and Davis Ford Roads.

From I-95

From Rte 95, get on the Springfield Expressway (aka Fairfax County Parkway) near the Springingfield Metro stop (see caution below). Springfield County Parkway changes name to Fairfax County Parkway and crosses Ox Road as shown below. Follow the detailed map from here.

Getting from I95 to the Springfield Expressway (Fairfax County Parkway) is difficult since only the HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes exit there. Coming south (from I495 or I395), exit at Keene Road, which is the first exit south of the major I495 intersection. Turn right at the second opportunity, marked To Rte 7100, and proceed in a complete circle to the first stop light on Backlick Road. Turn right. Proceed about a mile the entrance to Fairfax County Parkway/Springfield Expressway, marked Rte 7100.

From Ox Road (Fairfax)

Take Rte 66 to the Fairfax exit (Rte 123 = Chain Bridge Road = Ox Road). Follow Rte 123 through Fairfax several miles past GMU to the intersection with Fairfax County Parkway. The right turn onto Chapel Road (towards Clifton) is just past this intersection and the left turn onto Wolf Shoals Road is a few hundred yards after this turn. Follow my back roads map from there.

From Bent Tree Lane

The house is at the very end of Bent Tree Lane; a long gravel road that turns sharply to the left at the top of a hill alongside several mailboxes. Bent Tree changes name to Signal Hill Road at these mailboxes. If you reach Signal Hill, go back; you missed the turn.

Beep if our dogs (Kacz and Blitz) are outside. Be careful not to run over them; they've more enthusiasm than brains. The front entrance is to the left around the garage.
